The Story of the Shepherd Boy
Blog Article
In the heart of the mesmerizing rolling meadows, dwelt a young shepherd. His existence was essentially pure, simple, and honest. His primary duty was to look after his flock of sheep.
Their low murmuring and the whispering of the wind among the single tree on the peak were his only companions. Day in day, watching over his responsibilities instilled in him a notion of calm satisfaction.
However, there were at times moments of loneliness, when the shepherd boy would yearn for fellowship. During one such occasion out of sheer monotony, the shepherd boy conceived a naughty scheme.
Narratives of predators preying on sheep had long been circulating in the hamlet. So, the boy decided to exploit this fear and here played a trick on the inhabitants.
One morning he ran into the village yelling “Wolf! There is a wolf that has taken my sheep!” The frightened villagers sprinted up the hills to offer assistance but saw no beast.
The boy chuckled at the confusion on their faces. This prank persisted for a couple of more days. Yet, one day, a real wolf did charge at the flock. The shepherd boy raced for help, screaming “Wolf, Wolf!” But this time, no one responded.
Frustrated and alone, the boy fought against the wolf but could protect only few of his flock. Devastated, he returned to the village only to be met with a reprimand on honesty and the results of dishonesty.
His tale of this shepherd boy has been transmitted generations as a mediaeval parable for teaching the significance of honesty, the implications of dishonesty and the dangers of false alarms. Moreover, it stresses how trust once lost, is difficult to earn back. It's a story as pertinent today as it was then.
